Whether the hair on your body is dark or light, coarse or fine, your instinct is often to remove it as soon as it appears.
For some women, shaving regularly is an easy, albeit necessary fact of life. But for others, the dark stubble or quick return of body hair can be a daily struggle. At The Clinic for Dermatology & Wellness, we understand that excess body hair can be a hassle – which is why we offer the Sciton BBL system, a cutting edge device designed to reduce body hair growth without pain or downtime.
How Does IPL Hair Removal Work?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a treatment that utilizes visible, broad-spectrum light, which allows the device to target specific skin concerns or issues. In the case of hair removal, it is designed to target the melanin (or pigment) in your hair, which absorbs the light energy and transforming it into heat energy, which damages the hair follicle. The damage to the follicle causes hair growth to slow or stop altogether, making it an excellent choice for long-term hair removal.
The success of IPL for hair removal lies in the use of broad-spectrum light. Because the hair on your body can vary in thickness (from fine hair on your arms to coarse hair on your bikini line), IPL can be adjusted to target different skin and hair types, modified to ensure that you receive optimal results from your hair removal treatment.
IPL for hair removal was discovered accidentally in 1997, and documented as a side effect after using IPL to treat other skin conditions. Since the discovery, more research has been conducted, the technology has undergone significant improvements, and the IPL devices used today are safer and more powerful, offering more predictable results.

The Sciton BBL System
At The Clinic for Dermatology & Wellness, we use the Sciton BBL system, a revolutionary IPL hair removal device that, unlike many hair removal options, is safe for all skin types and tones. The advanced technology of the Sciton BBL System enables lasting hair reduction from all areas of your body, while simultaneously providing a fast and virtually pain-free experience for every patient.
The Sciton BBL System is unique, because it offers a variety of filters to target even the lightest, thinnest hair nearly anywhere on your body. It also utilizes ATC™ (Automatic Temperature Controller) Technology to maintain a consistent surface skin temperature to minimize damage to surrounding tissue, and ensure your comfort for the duration of your procedure.
We have chosen the Sciton BBL System as our preferred IPL hair removal device because of its advanced technology, and its ability to address a wide range of areas on your body, including:
- Small areas – Brows, sideburns, upper lip, chin, areola
- Medium areas – Face, neck, underarms, abdomen, bikini line
- Large areas – Shoulders, abdomen, partial arms, partial legs, pubic region
- Extra large – Back, full arms, full legs
When you come into The Clinic for Dermatology & Wellness for a consultation, you will talk with our Aesthetics Clinician, Joe Gatti PA-C. He will decide if you are a good candidate for the treatment, as well as determine the correct frequency and setting of the Sciton BBL device that will provide you with superior results. Our practice is proud to offer this more in-depth approach to the hair removal process, and we are the only clinic in the region to do so.

BBL Hair Removal Treatment and Side Effects
Your BBL hair removal treatment is performed in the comfort of our office, and the time it takes will vary according to the area treated, as well as the size of the treatment area. Once your treatment is complete, you can expect minor skin irritations such as redness, tenderness, itchiness or swelling, but these are normal and resolve quickly. Your skin may be more delicate after the treatment, so treat it gently – do not rub or scratch the area, and keep it clean and dry. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the effects of sunlight, so if the treatment area is one that is exposed to the sun, be sure to use sunscreen or cover the area if possible.

BBL Hair Removal Results
It is important that you understand that the results of your BBL hair removal sessions are not immediately visible. Because the treatment damages the hair follicle, it takes some time for the hair to die and fall out. Additionally, there may be some hair that wasn’t affected because it was in a different stage of the hair growth cycle, so you may require one or more additional treatments. You will be able to shave in between your sessions as needed, until you’ve achieved the results you desire.
Over time, you will notice a reduction in hair growth in the treatment area, and any hair that does grow back is typically thinner and less coarse. We will work with you to determine the number of sessions you will need for optimal results, so that you can enjoy the lasting gift of smoother, softer skin.
